A well-known scholar and an expert in Arabic language and literature, Professor (r)  Dr. Muhammad Al-Ghazali, has passed away December 18, 2023. He was a well-known scholar associated with the Islamic Research Institute and a member of the Shariah Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court. He served as a professor in the research department of the International Islamic University. He was a member of the Sharia Appellate Bench in the Supreme Court. He was also a Hafiz-e-Quran

Bio:

Dr. Muhammad Al-Ghazali was born on 27 September 1954 in Karachi, his father Maulana “Muhammad Ahmad Thanvi” belonged from Thana Bhawan, India, and was residing in Karachi at that time. Contrary to the popular tradition in Pakistan and India, his father named him only “Muhammad”, which was later changed to Muhammad Al-Ghazali by his elder brother “Dr. Mahmood Ahmad Ghazi”. Then he was known by the same name till his age.

Education:

 Initially, he completed the memorization (Hifz) of the Qur’an, after which he enrolled in Dars Nizami, along with completing Fazil Arabic. He did his MA in Arabic, University of Punjab, Lahore, and PhD from Islamia University, Bahawalpur.

Professional life and career:
Dr. Muhammad Al-Ghazali initially served as an Arabic teacher in the Pakistan Television program Al-Lsan Al-Arabi during 1978 and 1979. Then engaged as Senior Research Officer, Council of Islamic Ideology, Government of Pakistan from July 1979 to October 1981. From October 1981 to  April 1985, he was an Assistant Professor, Department of Arabic Studies and Literature, at International Islamic University, Islamabad, and from 1985 to 1991 and from 1993 to 1995, he was an Associate Professor.

At the same time, he was appointed as the editor of magazine “Dursat al-Islamiya” in 1985. It is a quarterly research magazine, which is being published by the Institute of Islamic Research, International Islamic University, Islamabad. This magazine has been published continuously and regularly since 1965. Continued to carry out the responsibilities of its administration.

While he was also associated with the International Islamic University, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia as an Associate Professor from July 1991 to June 1994. Then in March 2007, he became a professor and head of the Department of Islamic Thought, Islamic Research Institute, International Islamic University Islamabad and retired from the same post in 2014. While he was in charge of the editorship of Islamic Studies until 2018. On March 25, 2010, he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court, ad hoc member of the Sharia Appellate Bench and held this position until his death. He taught Arabic Language, Grammar  in Pakistan and outside Pakistan in various classes up to Graduate, Post Graduate and PhD level. Quranic sciences. Knowledge of Al-Kalam. Foundations and Principles of Sociology in the Qur’an. Role of Indian Subcontinent in Arabic/Islamic Literature. Introduction to Social Sciences. Philosophy of Religion. Islamic philosophy. Islamic Sociological Literature and specifically Qur’anic Studies, a PhD level course, was taught by him during this period.
