Esteemed scholar, the renowned muhaddith (narrator of hadith) Muhammad bin Abdul Ali Al-Azami Al-Ansari, the Sheikh of Hadith at the Arabic University in India has passed away. He passed away a few hours ago in his hometown of Meo, in the region of Uttar Pradesh, India, He spent a life filled with knowledge, dedication to the preservation of the authentic Sunnah (teachings of Prophet Muhammad), and writing.

He was one of the few remaining students who directly gained the knowledge of the hadith from the great muhaddith Nazir Hussain Al-Dihlavi. Hundreds of students graduated under his guidance, and he was blessed with righteous children and grandchildren, including his son, the honorable Sheikh As’ad Al-Azami, who is a teacher at the Salafi University in Banaras.

The deceased was among the leading scholars of hadith in the Indian subcontinent and one of the venerable elders. He traveled and taught in India, Kuwait, Riyadh, Bahrain, and other places, and his knowledge was sought after by thousands of Arabs and non-Arabs alike.

May Allah have mercy upon the Sheikh, and we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. وإنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون.

Date and Place of Birth: He was born on October 24, 1933 AD [corresponding to 5 Rajab 1352 AH] (he was currently 90 years old, ). He belongs to the Ansari tribe, which signifies loyalty because they were the ones who embraced Islam at the hands of the Ansar.
Education: He studied at the Jamia Alamia Arabia in Mau Azamgarh, Up and ed at the Saadiya School in Benares and the Dar Al-Hadith Al-Rahmaniya School. He graduated from the Jamia Al Islamia in Mau with a degree in Shariah studies. He obtained certificates of Molwi, Alim, Kamil, and Fazil from the government educational authority in India.
Among his teachers:
– His father, Abdul Ali, who was a student of Ahmad bin Hossam Al-Din and Khalil Ahmed Al-Saharnfouri, and he learned from them “Al-Kafiya” in grammar and other subjects.
– He recited the Quran to Sheikh Abdul Samad Al-Mubarakfouri and Sheikh Abdul Subhan Al-Azami, and learned from Muhammad bin Sulaiman bin Dawood Al-Ma’awi and Ahmad bin Mulla Hussam Al-Din Al-Ma’awi, both of whom were students of Nazir Hussein.
– The esteemed scholar Muhammad Abu Al-Qasim Saif Muhammad Saeed Al-Banarsi, a student of Nazir Hussein.
– Abdullah Shaikh Al-Ma’awi, the linguist and literary scholar, in the book “Sahih Al-Bukhari.”

Dissemination of Knowledge:
– He studied the Sahih Al-Bukhari more than 25 times, possibly up to 28 times. He also studied Sahih Muslim four times, Jami’ Al-Tirmidhi five times, and Al-Mishkat three times.
